The work should be of primary interest to a nation or the world, usually created with the intent to share nationally or internationally. Newspaper photographers who cover national or international stories should enter portfolios in this category.
On February 24, 2022 Russian forces invaded neighboring Ukraine. Nearly one year into the devastating war and occupation, Ukraine it is a country of immeasurable suffering, entrenched combat, mass graves, and under daily indiscriminate attack. More than 12 million people have been forced to flee. But Ukraine still stands. Ukrainian forces and civilians have also been galvanized to show the world inspiring strength and resiliency.
Along Ukraine's front lines, foreign volunteers of the International Legion have come to fight along side Ukraine against invading Russian forces. This small unit of five foreign soldiers in the Donetsk Region of Ukraine_ from the USA, New Zealand, and Germany_ left home to fight in the trenches of a treacherous and faraway war.
In all of its decades of service, Truskavets City Hospital, a Soviet-era medical center serving a city in western Ukraine, never had to specialize in treating amputees. But things change — sometimes in seconds, and with the roar of an incoming rocket. Now, Truskavets is part of Ukraine’s growing limb-replacement effort, with two of its floors filled to near overflow with soldiers. By late August of 2022, about 150 patients had made their way to the hospital’s orthopedic unit. There, they await new limbs — and new lives.
